Our History

Warm greetings as we welcome you to our church!

St. George Syrian Orthodox church, the first Indian Malayalee church in the Carolinas, is part of the Malankara Archdiocese which is under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of His Holiness the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church.

The church was started on January 28, 2006 with H.E. Mor Titus Yeldho Archbishop and Patriarchal Vicar of the Malankara Archdiocese in North America offering the Holy Eucharist in the presence of Very. Rev. Fr. Joseph C. Joseph, Rev. Fr. Mathews Edathara, Rev. Fr. Bijo Mathew and the Charlotte Malayalee community.

At a meeting held after the Holy Eucharist, H. E. Mor Titus Yeldho appointed Rev. Fr. Mathews Edathara as the vicar and Rev. Fr. Bijo Mathew as the assistant vicar of our church.

With blessings from God, we were able to purchase a small building on May of 2006. This building was dedicated in the presence of Very. Rev. Fr. Joseph C. Joseph, Rev. Fr. Mathews Edathara and Rev. Fr. Bijo Mathew by H.E. Mor Titus Yeldho on June 18, 2006.
